Artist's Statement

My paintings are based in landscape. While color, light and shadow may initially draw the viewer to my work, my intention is to offer a transformative experience. In capturing an ephemeral green in a sky or red in a shadow, I share some nuance of nature that attunes the viewer to observe more carefully the beauty of the natural world. 

I am inspired by the paintings of Joan Mitchell, Wolf Kahn and Claude Monet, all artists who reference nature in their work. While my interest was first captivated by their use of color, I return to their work because of each artist’s unique approach to mark-making; the particular quality of putting paint on canvas that allows one to comprehend viscerally the artist’s process. I share this need and satisfaction in making marks. My newer work moves in this direction as I strive to engage the viewer with the energy and immediacy of my creative process.

There needs to be a moment of surprise in any work, something that grabs the viewer (first of all, the maker) by the collar and won’t let him go.

Bio

I worked and consulted in the field of arts & health for seventeen years. Research in the field supports the theory that views of nature, whether through a window or represented in a painted landscape, encourage and sustain healing. I am struck by the synchronicity of my creative work (painting landscapes) and my curatorial work in the arts & health field; in both situations I affect the quality of the viewer’s experience. It is important to me that my work offers the possibility of transformation, of experiencing the world differently and in a way that supports health and well-being.
